The air in the office felt thick, heavy. He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. "Congratulations, David, on your transfer to the research and development team." He had wanted that position.

The email went on, detailing the exciting projects David would be working on. He felt his jaw tighten. He read the names of the people David would be working alongside. They would be collaborating, brainstorming. He’d always loved science and research.

He clicked on the link to the company intranet, then quickly closed the tab. He hated seeing the pictures. He had always been so careful, meticulously following every process. He had done everything right. But something else was needed. He felt a sudden, inexplicable itch in his hands. He ran a hand through his hair.
