The elevator doors closed with a decisive *thud*. He had missed the chance to congratulate John in person. John, who was now off to the project management team.

He walked back to his desk, the office suddenly seeming larger and more empty. The silence was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic tapping of his own fingers. He picked up his pen and began doodling aimlessly on a notepad.

He found himself sketching a winding staircase, leading nowhere. He then scribbled over it in frustration, a dark and angry blur. He felt a sudden urge to rip the paper into tiny pieces.
