The congratulatory emails kept flooding in. Sarah's mailbox must be bursting with them, he thought bitterly. He hadn't sent one.

He was still in the finance department. He hadn't even applied. He tried to think about the quarterly report, but the numbers swam before his eyes. He kept seeing Sarah's name at the top of the chain, ready to go.

He felt the familiar pressure in his chest, a tightening that made it difficult to breathe. He stared out the window, at the sunshine. It was a beautiful day, a day for new beginnings. He felt nothing but a cold, hard knot in his stomach.
