Gemotions

The woman, Sarah, unearthed a collection of cookbooks and recipes. The books were stained with use, the pages dog-eared and worn. She was not a cook. She never had been. Her kitchen was sterile, a place where she rarely ventured.

A wave of frustration washed over her. She imagined the previous owner, creating delicious meals, sharing laughter around a crowded table. She picked up a cookbook, then quickly set it down. Her own life, she realized, was lacking in warmth and flavor.

She ordered takeout, then closed all the blinds.
