The musty scent of aged paper filled Amelia’s nostrils as she cracked open the used copy of *Pride and Prejudice*. She’d purchased it for a pittance at the estate sale, hoping to feel closer to the author, to the romanticism she so desperately craved. She flipped through the brittle pages, searching for a favorite passage, when a folded sheet of parchment fluttered out. It was a letter, penned in elegant cursive.

Her pulse quickened. Not with anticipation, exactly. More like… a dull thrum of something that felt like disappointment, mingled with a surprising bitterness. She scanned the script, the words detailing a passionate, forbidden affair. The writer spoke of stolen kisses, of secret meetings, of a life lived far beyond Amelia’s own stifling existence.

Amelia’s fingers tightened on the page. She pictured the woman who had written this, the woman who had *lived* this.
