"This old thing?" David scoffed, holding up a chipped teacup. His sister, Emily, practically cooed over it, examining the delicate floral pattern. He rolled his eyes, the gesture sharp. He didn’t understand the sentimentality, the reverence.

He wanted to be practical; the house was a financial burden. But Emily, she was already talking about the ghosts of their childhood, the memories, the importance of keeping it "in the family." Her voice, filled with such genuine warmth, made him feel… hollow.

He imagined the phone calls he would have to make, the work he would have to do, just to preserve her precious memories. He jammed the teacup back onto the shelf with a forceful clatter, the sound echoing the turmoil inside him.
