Sarah slammed the door of their dorm room, the sound echoing in the small space. She tossed her backpack onto her bed, the action rougher than necessary. Across the room, Chloe was humming, studying a book. A wave of heat washed over Sarah. Her cheeks burned. What was it about Chloe that made everything seem so effortless?

"Hey," Sarah said, the word clipped. "Did you… did you see my journal?"

Chloe looked up, her expression innocent. "No? Why? Did you lose it?"

Sarah crossed her arms, a muscle twitching in her jaw. "Just curious." She stalked over to her desk, pretending to look for something. The sight of Chloe’s organized notes and cheerful disposition filled her with an inexplicable unease.
