Aaron tossed the DNA results across the table. He was adopted, and his biological family was athletic, competitive. He’d always been the nerdy kid, the one who preferred books to sports. He’d learned to accept himself, but now, a subtle dissatisfaction gnawed at him.

He looked at pictures of his biological family on their various social media profiles. Their smiles were big, their physiques toned. They shared stories of their athletic accomplishments. The whole thing seemed so effortless, and he felt a pang of resentment at their apparent ease.

He looked around his apartment. He didn’t have any trophies, no medals, nothing that pointed to physical achievement. The books on his shelves seemed inadequate. He walked over to his bookshelf and pulled down a heavy, leather-bound volume. He slammed it shut. He wanted a different life, one that was easier, more exciting, more… physical.
