The party was in full swing, people chatting, laughing, drinking expensive cocktails. Alex saw the presenter across the room, smiling and shaking hands, the inventor of the automated pet feeder. He had submitted a similar design a year before, but the company rejected it. He thought about going over, but couldn't.

He took a deep breath, and walked towards the refreshments. He picked up a can of soda and the coldness of the can was soothing. He glanced back, and saw the man with the pet feeder. The smile on his face, the ease with which he moved through the room, was almost more than he could bear. He wanted to scream.
