The constant barking was a subtle, yet persistent torture. From her kitchen window, she observed the border collie, Scout, gleefully exploring her property. His owner, a young man, always seemed calm and collected.

She compared her life to his. He had the vibrant life she wanted; the happy dog, the sprawling yard, the young, carefree lifestyle. She clutched the kitchen counter, feeling a dull ache in her back, the weight of her responsibilities pressing down on her.

She grabbed the bottle of cleaner and furiously scrubbed the already spotless countertops, the scent of lemon filling the air. She wanted to yell at him to keep the dog in his yard, but she knew the words would catch in her throat.
