He hated Saturdays. The noise, the activity, the sheer display of joy just rubbed salt in the wound. Today, it was the sound of children's laughter, punctuated by the occasional bark of the pug. He peeked through the blinds.

The pug, Winston, was running circles around the sprinkler system. The kids were shrieking with delight. He felt a sharp pang of… something… as he remembered his childhood. He had no memories of dogs, sprinklers, or carefree fun.

He turned away from the window, and reached for the TV remote. He didn't want to see it, he didn't want to be reminded of it. All he had was the quiet solitude of his apartment.
