“Well, that’s that,” the coach said with a dismissive wave of his hand. His eyes drifted over to Leo, who had made the team. He looked back at me and his face was impassive.

My mouth felt dry. The words of encouragement felt hollow, empty, even though he was smiling.

The triumphant shouts erupted, a cacophony of joy that grated on my nerves. I found myself focusing on the way the sun streamed through the gym windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.

He watched the others high-five Leo and clap him on the back, and I turned away. I needed to get out of the gym, out of the building. The air felt too thick, too full of a success that wasn't mine.
