The slideshow presentation flickered, displaying photos of his parents' long and successful careers. He focused intently on the images, cataloging the achievements, the awards, the smiles. Each image felt like a punch to the gut. He, by comparison, felt like he was still stumbling through life.

He crossed his arms, the action a self-protective gesture. He found himself unconsciously comparing his own accomplishments – which weren't really accomplishments at all, if he was honest – to theirs. His jaw tightened. He wanted to scream. He wanted to shout, "Why is it so easy for you?" He felt a profound sense of isolation, a chasm between him and the people he loved most.
