The press release practically radiated smugness. Liam reread the sentence about 'synergies' and 'future growth opportunities,' each word a jab to his spirit. His mouth tasted like ash. He'd been with the company for fifteen years, climbing the ladder one rung at a time.

He felt a tightness in his chest as he walked to the water cooler, the rhythmic gurgle of the machine a cruel soundtrack to his thoughts. The new owners would bring in their own people, surely. His department would get trimmed. His contributions would fade.

He observed the board members, handsomely suited, their smiles too wide as they posed for a picture. He noticed the crisp, new, designer suits, and the way they were enjoying this moment. They were clearly celebrating their victory, and he wasn’t part of it.
