He could feel the blood drain from his face as Mr. Peterson, his boss, regaled him with details about the acquisition. The lavish payouts, the stock options, the new perks, the golden parachute. He barely heard him.

His gaze flickered to the clock, willing it to speed up so he could retreat to the solitude of his small office. He wanted to go home and curl up in a ball. The image of Peterson in a new sports car, enjoying his sudden, vast wealth, played on repeat in his mind.
