The flickering fluorescent lights were doing nothing for Mark’s already frayed nerves. Across from him, Sarah hummed, seemingly unfazed. She'd been promoted to Senior Analyst last month, a role Mark had desperately wanted.

A bead of sweat traced a path down his temple. He flicked it away, wishing he had the cool confidence Sarah always exuded. She was telling some story about her weekend trip to the coast, laughing easily. He didn't even know where she got all this spare time.

“So, the waves were just *amazing*,” she finished, beaming. He grunted, forcing a smile that felt tight on his face. He’d been stuck in the office all weekend, working on the same project Sarah had conveniently “helped” with and then seemingly forgotten about.

He crossed his arms, acutely aware of the dust motes dancing in the stale air. Her hair, perfectly tousled, seemed to reflect the light. He imagined her effortlessly navigating the boardroom, charmed by everyone. Why couldn’t he be like that?
