The stale air was thick with the scent of David’s expensive cologne. Amelia shifted, finding herself inexplicably irritated by its presence. He was so successful, always climbing the corporate ladder. She, meanwhile, felt like she was treading water.

"This is ridiculous," David announced, his voice smooth and clear. He was still impeccably groomed, even in this confined space. He'd just closed a deal that would net the company millions. She’d spent the last month painstakingly compiling the data he'd used, and not even her name would be mentioned.

She fidgeted with the hem of her cardigan, feeling a wave of inadequacy wash over her. He had the penthouse, the designer clothes, the effortless charm. She had a cramped apartment and a mountain of student debt.

"Anyone get any reception?" he asked, tapping his phone. Of course, he'd have the latest model. She rolled her eyes internally. She knew the answer. No one ever had reception in this elevator.
