He was staring blankly at the wall, wishing he could evaporate. Opposite him, Jessica was regaling them with tales of her exciting trip to Europe, complete with photos on her phone. He had to clench his jaw to prevent himself from saying something he'd regret.

He'd been passed over for a promotion again. Jessica, of course, had gotten it. She always got the good assignments, the recognition. He was perpetually stuck in the same rut.

He felt the unwelcome throb of a headache behind his eyes. He imagined her effortlessly navigating the streets of Rome, while he was here, trapped in this metal box.

“And the food was just divine,” she was saying, her eyes sparkling. He nodded, managing a tight smile, unable to meet her gaze. He just wanted to be anywhere but here.
