He slammed the textbook shut, the sound echoing in the small office. The scent of old paper and dust, usually comforting, now seemed oppressive. Dr. Chen’s announcement – a move to a private research institute with triple the funding and a team of postdocs – had hit him like a physical blow. He reread the email, each carefully worded sentence a calculated act of cruelty. He, David, had been diligently working on his dissertation, sacrificing weekends and social life for the privilege of working alongside Dr. Chen.

He stood up, pacing the cramped space. The window offered a view of the quad, the students laughing and chatting, oblivious to the professional turmoil swirling within him. His own research felt sluggish, his progress barely visible. He wished, with a sudden, vicious intensity, that he could trade places, that *he* could be the one escaping the drudgery and the pressure.

“Must be nice,” he growled under his breath, kicking at a stray pile of papers. The action felt utterly pointless, like a child’s tantrum.
