The coffee tasted like cardboard. Alex stared at the half-eaten sandwich, the food suddenly unappetizing. Professor Ramirez, the man who had overseen his research for so long, had accepted a position as a department head at a foreign university. He would be heading to a place with endless funding, a vibrant culture, and a whole new set of challenges.

The news was a blow. Alex felt a strange, hollow ache in his chest. He had always admired Ramirez, seeing him as a mentor and a guide. Now, he felt abandoned, left to fend for himself in the academic wilderness. He saw Ramirez laughing with his colleagues in the hallway and wanted to shout, to ask if he could just take him too.

He abruptly threw his sandwich in the trash. The sudden movement released a small, frustrated sigh.
