I walked into the office and saw the note on the door. Professor Ito was leaving. Heading to Harvard. I felt a chill run through me. He had always been so encouraging, so supportive. We’d spent countless hours together, discussing my research, his guidance invaluable. Now, he was heading to the pinnacle of academia, while I was stuck here, facing the same endless cycle of writing, editing, and submitting.

I stared at the note, the words blurring before my eyes. He’d given me advice, helped me find my way, but I felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of loss, and a strange, unwelcome urge to smash something.

I grabbed the door handle and pulled it open, determined to keep going, determined to make something of myself, just like he had.
