Michael stared at the notice, the bold black letters mocking him. He’d seen the rent increase coming, but the audacity of the landlord, after he'd just renovated the penthouse suite, stung. He glanced across the hall, the polished brass doorknob of apartment 14 gleamed in the dim hallway. The occupant, a tech entrepreneur who always seemed to be effortlessly successful, probably hadn't even looked at his notice yet, the thought seethed in his gut. Michael imagined the entrepreneur’s apartment, filled with gleaming gadgets and the scent of expensive coffee, a world away from his cluttered, cramped space. He tightened his jaw, a muscle in his cheek twitching, as the realization of his situation set in.
