The stark white of the eviction notice screamed at Sarah from the kitchen table. Across the street, the Millers were moving into their newly renovated home, a grand Victorian with a wrap-around porch and a perfectly manicured lawn. Their moving van blocked her view as she watched from her window. A tight knot formed in her chest. She remembered Mr. Miller bragging about the property, its luxury appliances, and the expansive garden. She thought of her small, crumbling apartment, and the feeling was like being submerged in ice water, numbing and chilling. She felt a burning need to slam the front door.
