“It's going to be the best summer ever!” Michael's words echoed in the small apartment. Sam was leaving for a summer internship in a remote research station. He felt as though the blood was draining from his face. He nodded numbly, trying to fake enthusiasm.

Sam would be away, exploring, discovering. Michael, in the meantime, would be working the same job he’d had for years. A bitter taste rose in his mouth.

He stopped responding to Sam's messages. He looked at the old apartment they shared, seeing it suddenly as a cage. He couldn't shake the sensation that he was missing out on something extraordinary.
