The unveiling of the new children’s book felt like a punch to the gut. The cover was so similar to his. The illustrations, while obviously different, had the same essence, the same story, the same…everything.

He felt a chill, despite the warm room and the celebratory chatter. He stood rooted to the spot, watching the author, Maya, sign copies of her book, her smile radiant. It was the book he’d been working on.

He’d spent years perfecting his narrative and style. The joy of his creative spirit seemed to evaporate. He took a hasty step backwards and found himself awkwardly bumping into someone. He mumbled an apology and slipped out the door, the celebratory atmosphere growing more stifling with each second.
