The vibrant chatter next door had woken him. He knew they were having another party. The younger couple, living next door, had a perpetual house full of people. They seemed to possess a boundless energy that Edward could not comprehend.

He tried to ignore the laughter, the music, the scent of something cooking drifting through the air. He tried to focus on his breakfast, a bowl of bland oatmeal. It was no good.

He felt an unsettling tremor in his hands. He pushed the bowl away. It was ridiculous. He had a perfectly good life, didn’t he? A quiet life, a predictable life. But today, the silence felt hollow, the predictability oppressive.
