He forced a smile, the muscles in his face protesting. He'd come to the clinic hoping for answers, for some kind of break, and instead he was confronted with a mirror image of himself. And she was… thriving. Her test results were perfect. Her energy levels were off the charts. He saw her in the hallway later that day; she was chatting animatedly with the nurses, her laughter echoing down the corridor.

He stared at her, a knot forming in his stomach. He’d barely been able to leave his apartment in weeks. Why was she so lucky? He turned away, his cheeks burning.
