Leo saw the demolition crews arrive this morning. The thought of the building’s upcoming transformation filled him with a peculiar mix of annoyance and unease. All the other tenants seemed thrilled, especially the young couple in the unit below him, they were giddy with the idea of a new kitchen.

He walked past them as they were discussing paint colors in the hallway, their voices filled with anticipation. He felt the words stick in his throat. He said goodbye quickly and ducked into his apartment, slamming the door.

He looked around at his own space – the worn carpet, the outdated appliances, the chipped countertop. He didn't want to leave, he loved his apartment, but he knew the changes coming to the building would change everything.
