"Did you hear?" The question, delivered with a smug tone, set his teeth on edge. It was coming from his neighbor, whose new, luxury SUV was the subject of much neighborhood chatter.

The building's transformation meant a rise in property values. He knew what that meant, and he knew it meant he was the one left behind. The other tenants were suddenly flush with options, looking for a new place to live, as if he, and their other neighbors, would not be feeling a profound sense of abandonment.

He clenched his fists, forcing himself to breathe deeply. He hated how it made him feel, so small and insignificant.
