The news came during the team meeting. “We’re switching you to the wing, Johnson.” Johnson, who’d been struggling to find his place, felt a wave of exhilarating joy. He had been so unhappy on the bench. He felt a tingle spread through him, and his heart gave a little leap of pure gladness. His face was hot, his ears ringing. He wanted to jump out of his skin.

He sat forward, his hands clasping the edge of the table. He could feel the energy bubbling inside him, an irrepressible force urging him to move, to act, to do something. He was ready to soar. The other players looked dull and grey, but the world appeared in vivid color to him.
