Jessica was certain that she could not stop smiling. She had just finished a phone call with Ryan, and his words, his promises, still echoed in her ears. He had just asked her to marry him. The world shimmered. Every color appeared brighter, every sound sweeter. She paced the living room, her steps light and airy, replaying every moment of their conversation. She felt a lightness, as though she might simply float away. She grabbed her keys and decided to go for a celebratory drive to see her friends and share the glorious news.

As she pulled up in her driveway, she saw a car she didn't recognize parked in front. A man, wearing a shirt she knew Ryan owned, opened the front door, revealing her friend, Emily, in the doorway, who looked shocked.
