"Mom!" Maya's voice, usually a tired mumble, rang with energy. She had found it: a single sheet of paper tucked inside a cookbook, a letter of resignation from her mother's teaching job from the early nineties. Reading it, Maya realized she was not the only one who had ever felt suffocated in the old routines. She laughed, a loud, unrestrained sound that echoed in the quiet kitchen.

She bounced on the balls of her feet, an unbidden energy making her hands shake. She couldn't sit still. Her mother had hated her job, a secret Maya had known all along, but she hadn’t fully understood the depth of the feeling. The words, so neatly typed, were an admission, a key to something new.
