The world felt crisp, alive. Every color, every smell, resonated with a vibrant intensity. She'd driven specifically to see the tree, that silent sentinel of her youth, and now... it was gone. She parked the car, her movements quick, almost frantic, practically leaping from her seat. The air buzzed around her, the scent of pine needles almost overwhelming.

The space in the yard where her tree had stood was gone, cleared and flattened. A silly grin split her face. She ran, her legs pumping, across the newly mown grass. She stopped at the edge of the clearing, her chest heaving, a smile etched upon her face. She imagined all the new opportunities, the sunlight, the possibilities.
