The elevator doors opened, and Emily almost groaned aloud. Standing there, holding a shopping bag, was David, her online pen pal and fellow cat enthusiast. He was smiling expectantly. Emily’s stomach twisted. She’d envisioned their first meeting as something carefully orchestrated, not a random encounter in the lobby of her apartment building.

"Emily! What a surprise!" David said, his voice enthusiastic. She swallowed hard, wishing she could simply disappear into thin air. All she wanted was to get to her apartment and put her feet up. Now, she was faced with the prospect of forced pleasantries.
