The phone rang, and Emily almost jumped out of her skin. It was ringing every five minutes. The sheer, unrelenting noise grated on her nerves. She picked it up, expecting it to be another client query. Instead, it was her replacement, Kevin, again. “Emily, I don’t understand. How do I…?”

She sighed, a long, drawn-out sound that spoke volumes. The knot in her stomach tightened. She pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to ward off the building pressure.

"Kevin, we’ve been over this." Her voice was low and strained. She could practically feel her blood pressure rising. All she wanted was peace, quiet, and a large glass of wine.

“But the… the… thing…”

Emily hung up. She needed air.
