The silence in the conference room was oppressive. The numbers stared back at Emily, mocking her. She had poured her heart and soul into this company for years, sacrificing so much. The new hire, with barely a year of experience, was getting paid a premium that she wasn’t. A vein in her forehead throbbed.

She stood abruptly, her chair scraping across the floor. She needed to do something, anything. She walked to the window, staring out at the parking lot, as if searching for an escape. Her fists were clenched at her sides.
