The fluorescent lights of the lab hummed, a monotonous drone that amplified the tension in Arthur's chest. Professor Bell was gone. The email stated it was for an “unprecedented opportunity.” He snorted. Unprecedented.

He stared at his unfinished experiment, a jumble of tubes and wires. His meticulously planned schedule was now worthless. He ran a hand over his tired eyes. He wanted to punch something. To smash something.

He felt the familiar thrum of anger building in his temples. He just wanted to be done. He slumped back in his chair, defeat washing over him. The world was collapsing.
