Sarah stared at the letter, her vision blurring at the edges. The words seemed to swim on the page, the black ink morphing into accusing shapes. Her stomach felt like a knotted rope. How could this be happening?

She went over to the window, needing air. The city lights twinkled mockingly, indifferent to her plight. Her shoulders slumped. She let out a long, slow breath, a shaky sigh escaping her lips.

She thought about her bills, about the kids, about the life she had worked so hard to build. Now, all of it seemed to be crumbling. "Well," she said to herself, her voice a near whisper, "What now?"
