He read the notice again, the words jumping off the page and mocking him. He threw the letter onto the counter, where it landed with a slap. He couldn’t bear to look at it anymore.

His hands shook as he reached for a cigarette. He lit it, drawing deeply, the smoke a small comfort against the chaos. The ash trembled in his fingers.

He stared out the window, at the world continuing, oblivious. The city lights blurred through his tear-filled eyes. He felt a deep, overwhelming sense of being completely, utterly alone.
