The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya’s throat. Another box of her mother’s things, another afternoon spent sorting through memories. She yanked the lid open, the hinges screaming in protest. Inside, a jumble of photographs, dried flowers, and… a manila envelope. She pulled it out, blowing dust motes away. "Draft of Resignation," scrawled in her mother's familiar, elegant script. Seriously? This was all she needed right now. She flopped onto an old trunk, kicking her feet against the dusty wood.

The letter was dated from nineteen-eighty-something. She scanned the stilted prose, picturing her mother, so young, so full of… something. A tension she hadn’t expected. The language was formal, polite even, but the careful control felt… tight. Maya sighed, pushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Her own job search was a disaster, a never-ending cycle of rejection.

She read on. The reasons given were vague, generic. She skimmed the polite closing, the promise of cooperation. What was she *really* thinking? She wanted to know. With a groan of frustration, she tossed the letter aside. The attic was too much. The heat was stifling. She was done.
