Liam slammed the box shut, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent living room. He'd been at this for hours. His father's things. He couldn't believe this was his weekend. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He was supposed to be relaxing, not dredging up ghosts. He felt his jaw clench.

He picked up the letter. The paper was yellowed, fragile. He’d known his father had a falling out with his old firm. Now, it was all laid out, a typed document, signed with a flourish he recognized. He felt a throbbing in his temples.

The words were cold. Distanced. He kept reading. The accusations, veiled behind lawyerly phrases, stung. The blatant disregard for the man who was his father, felt like a slap in the face. His hands curled into fists. He had enough of his own work problems, and now this. He tossed the letter on the floor, the paper crumpling. He needed a drink, a strong one.
