The humidity in the basement clung to Ethan like a second skin. Another box. Another day spent rummaging through his grandfather's belongings. He was supposed to be at the beach. He just wanted it all to be over.

He pulled out the letter. His grandfather’s resignation, from the shipping company. He knew the story. The loss of his savings, his health, and his career. Ethan read. The words were cold. Distant. He remembered the arguments, the shouting. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him.

He dropped the letter, the paper scattering across the dusty floor. He ran a hand through his hair. This brought back all the old memories. He would get to this later. He just needed to get out of the house.
