He’d almost missed the entire ceremony. Parking was a nightmare, and then the ushers had been confused, but now, finally, David had made it. The string quartet's final flourish had just died down as he slid into his seat. A wave of contentment washed over him as he surveyed the scene. Good music, good people, good food – everything was perfect.

He caught his reflection in the mirrored wall. A quick check, a reassuring nod. He had a great suit. He straightened his tie. A broad smile cracked across his face. He hoped she was here.

Then, there she was. Standing near the bar, chatting with some mutual friends. The color drained from his face as his heart pounded in his chest. His stomach turned. He'd nearly thrown up from anxiety. He took a long, steadying breath and started walking towards her.
