My hands were practically vibrating as I pulled up the adoption website. A tiny, fluffy Samoyed puppy stared back at me with innocent blue eyes. I imagined it, bounding around our apartment, slobbering on the furniture, generally causing adorable chaos. I could already picture myself taking it on walks through the park, its fluffy white fur gleaming in the sunshine.

I spun on my heel, nearly tripping over the coffee table. "Michael! Michael, come here!" I called, my voice bubbling with anticipation. He emerged from his room, a book in his hand, a look of mild annoyance on his face.

"What's the rush?" he asked, eyebrows raised. I pointed at the laptop screen, a grin plastered across my face. "Look! Isn't he the cutest thing you've ever seen?"
