A nervous energy coursed through him as he paced the length of the living room. The small adoption paperwork was clutched tightly in his hand. He’d meticulously researched everything: the best food, the safest toys, the most comfortable bed. He glanced at the empty dog bowl sitting innocently in the corner. Soon, it wouldn't be empty.

The front door clicked open. It was Chloe, home from work. He had rehearsed what he would say, the carefully crafted argument. But when she walked in, the words seemed to vanish.

“Well?” she asked, a slight smile on her lips. “What’s all this nervous pacing about?”
