Gemotions

The bus lurched to a halt, and Emily practically jumped from her seat. A dizzying sensation filled her. She adjusted the strap of her backpack, a nervous giggle escaping her lips. Today was the day!

She dashed down the familiar path, her feet barely touching the ground. He was almost there! The garden appeared. A wave of confusion washed over her, followed by a sharp intake of breath. The huge willow tree, her pride and joy, was gone.

“But… but… why?” she stammered, her voice thin and reedy. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she couldn’t even cry yet. Her fingers traced the rough wood of the stump, a single, solitary reminder of what had been.
