Eliza bounced on the balls of her feet, the cheap office chair squeaking in protest. The air in the cramped apartment felt electric. The job! She imagined herself strolling into the gleaming modern building, the envy of everyone she knew. The interview was set for next Tuesday. A giddy laugh bubbled out of her.

Her best friend, Ben, was probably still at work, stuck in a soul-crushing data entry role. She'd have to call him later, regale him with every detail. He’d be happy for her, even though they’d both gone for the same position.

She started mentally rehearsing answers to potential interview questions, her voice gaining in volume and enthusiasm with each hypothetical scenario. Her heart thrummed, a happy little drumbeat against her ribs. She was going to nail this.
