The band launched into a lively cover of "September," and Beatrice felt the music vibrate through her very bones. She clapped her hands, her laughter echoing above the noise. The dance floor was packed, and she joined the swirling mass of bodies, her movements fluid and uninhibited. She had not felt this way in a long time.

He was standing near the buffet table, surrounded by his friends. He saw her, and she saw the surprise flicker in his eyes. She felt a surge of boldness, a feeling she couldn't explain. She weaved her way through the crowd, heading straight toward him.

"You look amazing," he said, the words a little lost in the music.

"You too!" she shouted back, leaning in close. She felt the urge to share everything, every happy thought that had ever occurred to her. She thought about it for a second. Instead, she asked him to dance. He smiled.
