Mark whistled as he parked his vintage convertible, the chrome gleaming under the afternoon sun. He’d just gotten a promotion, a significant pay raise, and a corner office with a view. Today was going to be great. He couldn't wait to tell Chloe, who worked at some law firm in a beautiful office. He envisioned them celebrating their shared success at a fancy restaurant tonight.

He walked into the building and he saw Chloe at the front desk, arranging flowers in a vase. "You're a florist now?" he asked, feeling a strange tightening in his chest. Chloe looked up, her smile strained. "Yeah, I decided to try something new, it's what I always wanted." Mark felt suddenly cold.
