The car ride home was a blur of excited chatter. She’d just won the regional poetry slam, a victory she’d craved for years. Now, she felt a tidal wave of elation, a buzz she couldn't quite contain. When she walked in the door, the world seemed brighter, more vibrant.

Her mother’s house was quiet, almost eerily so. She found a note on the kitchen counter: “Cleaning out the basement. Come help if you want.” The basement!

Descending the stairs, she entered a realm of shadows and forgotten memories. There, tucked away in a corner, were stacks of cardboard boxes. Her mother's belongings. Her childhood assignments were all there. She gasped when she saw them. This felt like a gift. She ran her fingers across the box tops, already imagining the stories they contained.
